Holidays to Fuerteventura

Fuerteventure - sun, sea and surf

For long white beaches and cool refreshing waters, Fuerteventura holidays are perfect. But this popular holiday destination is not just for those who want to lie on a beach and relax. There is also plenty to do for visitors looking for a bit of action and fun on Fuerteventura holidays.

The island is around 100km from the coast of Africa and at around 98km long, it’s the second largest Canary Island.  Its location lends itself to some beautiful weather; ideal for making the most of the 50km of white sanded beaches.

Unlike most holiday destinations, the beaches of Fuerteventura do not get busy and stressful. In fact, even when the island is busy with tourists, there is always a secluded area of beach to make the most of.

The landscape of Fuerteventura is fascinating; with its unusual scenery being the result of volcanic activity. But despite the beauty of the destination, it never seems to become overrun with tourists. In fact, people who are on holiday on nearby islands such as Lanzarote, will often come over to Fuerteventura in order to escape the tourists and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Hints and tips for your Fuerteventura holiday

Fuerteventura Attractions

Fuerteventura holidays are all about the beaches and the sea. So once you have soaked up the sun, it might be a good idea to make a splash in the sea. Windsurfing is extremely popular here because of the calm waters and the good winds. But if you’d rather be under the sea than trying to balance on top of it, then the scuba diving here is also spectacular. As well as coral reefs, you can also see shipwrecks and some rays, angel sharks and tuna fish. Snorkelling offers an alternative for those not brave enough to dive and with great visibility in the sea off Fuerteventura, there’s plenty to see.

The unusual landscape is fascinating and reminds tourists on Fuerteventura holidays that there is plenty more to explore than the white sandy beaches (although these are certainly on the agenda of most visitors). Make the most of the strange scenery by taking a jeep safari of the area.

When you’ve had enough of all that sun bathing, you may fancy a little trip to the zoo. Oasis de Los Camellos is really popular with the tourists who can enjoy parrot shows, horse riding and camel safaris as well as looking at their selection of animals.

For family groups, another way to keep the children entertained on Fuerteventura holidays is at Baku Water Park. Here, there are slides and pools so that the youngsters can make a real splash and at night time, there are shows and plenty of entertainment.

Eating in Fuerteventura

Not surprisingly, the order of the day on Fuerteventura is fish and seafood. Here, you will enjoy fresh fish cleverly incorporated into some delicious dishes. Goat’s cheese is another popular ingredient with plenty of goats roaming the island. The island has a few interesting accompaniments to its cuisine. Papas Arrugadas is a popular one. Translated as wrinkly potatoes, these are cooked in very salty water to give them their wrinkled appearance. These are usually served with Mojo which is a sauce made from garlic, olive oil, vinegar and red pepper, paprika or fresh coriander. If you prefer your home comforts, then Fuerteventura holidays can be adapted to suit you. The island is well served when it comes to English restaurants; particularly to the North of the island.

Fuerteventura Transport

Most visitors to Fuerteventura opt for car hire as a way of getting around the island. You may want to choose a 4x4 vehicle if you are planning to explore the volcanic landscape though. Other than car hire, there is also the option of seeing the island by bus. There is a good service and discount cards available if you’re planning on using buses throughout your Fuerteventura holidays. The local ferries are also great for taking you from one end of the island to the other and of course, for a bit of island hopping.

Things not to miss in Fuerteventura

The landscape and surroundings of Fuerteventura are any hikers’ dreams. Take a trip along the more deserted routes and you will come across several abandoned beaches along the way as well as some breathtaking views.

There are plenty of museums on the island for any visitors looking to find out more about the rich history here. There is an agricultural museum as well as Betancuria Museum which has exhibits dating back to prehistoric times.

The sand dunes in Corralejo are a must during Fuerteventura holidays. They are an amazing sight and walking close to them can make you feel as though you are on a different planet.

A visit to the original capital of the island can make for an interesting break from the long beaches. The population of this town is extremely small and it is heavily reliant on holidaymakers. Tourists go to Betancuria in order to visit the pretty Santa Maria church which has been restored and to visit the Museo Arqueologico y Ethnografico which is a museum that looks into the history of the area. It’s a quiet relaxing town; great for a peaceful meal or a shopping trip with a difference.

In keeping with the desert landscape, there is the opportunity to take a camel ride. A camel safari from Jandia includes a ride, a trip to the zoo as well as a traditional Canarian meal.

Weather in Fuerteventura

If there’s one thing that all holidaymakers to Fuerteventura have in common, it is their love for the sun. And here, there’s plenty to go around. In the summers, visitors enjoy dry and hot conditions with temperatures sometimes reaching 35 degrees. Temperatures in the winter remain impressive, sticking with highs of around 22 degrees. There is a wind though which is refreshing and great for windsurfers. The island boasts more than 3000 hours of sunshine a year and it is this which makes the destination so popular all year round. There is some rain and this normally occurs between the months of October and March. But overall, Fuerteventura holidays can promise an impressive climate all year round.
