Welcome to Las Vegas

Las Vegas

Unlock the real key to Las Vegas!

The key to Las Vegas holidays is not money; it's not gambling skill or the company you keep. It's stamina pure and simple. Check into Las Vegas and you're checking in for a good time, not a long time. Vegas doesn't sleep and a holiday to Las Vegas means you had better get all the sleep you can on the plane, because there's none to be had in this town.

Las Vegas holidays are the ultimate party and once you've made your hotel selection courtesy of Holiday Supermarket, the biggest decision you now have is the series of activities. There's actually a surprisingly huge amount of things to do on a holiday to Las Vegas.

Number 1 is gambling of course; but here's the tip. Set yourself a time limit (or dollar limit) and then get out of there because there are other things going on. The hotel pool beckons and the food you'll find in Las Vegas holidays is second to none.

Go for a walk on the Strip and stop off at the Bellagio Fountains. They're free and it's a show worth seeing (plus, there's gratis people watching thrown in too). Cirque du Soleil is on permanent booking and this is a circus show you simply must check out. This French Canadian production is on at the Mirage and the sight of Olympic-class athletes doing their thing just puts that whole lion and tiger show of old to shame.

Information & Facts

Climate

This is desert country, so you won't be needing the ski jacket, nor the umbrella any time soon. The yearly average suggests about 300 sunny days per year. Temps during summer can climb to an average 40C so you'll need the air-con turned up. Hey it's a holiday to Las Vegas!
Winter gets cooler, all the way down to around 16C during the December/January period. Basically, don't worry about the weather. Spring and autumn are nice.

Eating Out

Cheap, expensive and everything in between.

America is famous for many things and breakfast is one of them. An American buffet breakfast is best kept a secret from your doctor and attended on an empty stomach. The best one in Vegas? It has to be the buffet at the Wynn on the Boulevard. Likewise, Vegas is home to that most natural of American institutions - the all-you-can-eat buffet!

The budget options - try the afore-mentioned buffet at the Wynn and make it last until dinner time! The Green valley Ranch Casino and the Red Rock have some of the cheapest buffet's in town. You'll find them easily - just follow the locals when they're on their downtime. The best buffet in the downtown area is probably at the Main Street Station weekend champagne brunch is just $10.

Mid price options - try Ellis Island casino just east of Bally's and check out the steak dinner. They brew their own root beer on site too - and it's pretty cool! Steak and eggs is as Americana as it gets. Try the Gold Rush a little out of town in Henderson. It's just a short cab ride for some of the beat steak you'll find in Vegas.

Splurge - oh so easy on your holiday to Las Vegas. World famous Wolfgang Puck has a restaurant here and many of the large 'name' casinos have 'star' chefs flipping the skillets. Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars is extremely good, extremely expensive and a little touch of Paris in the Vegas heat. Atelier de Joel Robuchon at the MGM Grand is indeed, grand. If your significant other is with you and something special is required, try San Francisco chef Michael Mina's Nobhill at the MGM.

Sightseeing

Vegas has everything; absolutely everything

If gambling is your thing, you are well-catered for here. If you like the high life, here's where to do it. If you like non-stop activity Vegas has that too. But don't just stay in your hotel, throwing chips on a table all night and all day - get out and enjoy the killer cool things to do in Las Vegas.

Shark Reef - now you might think you're in town to party, party, party... but take a little time for one of the best aquariums you'll ever see. The Shark Reef at the Mandalay Bay is brilliant. Crocs, turtles, sharks, stingrays and even a Komodo Dragon, a fearsome beast found on an island in the Indonesian archipelago.

Skydiving - feeling adventurous? Go skydiving indoors in safety and without an instructor. The Indoor skydiving centre is basically a vertical wind tunnel that blows you straight up; you cruise, flip and spin and then are let down. The most fun you'll have in an enclosed space!

Every show under the sun - whenever anyone mentions their holiday to Las Vegas, invariably it's all about one of the shows they caught. There are dozens to consider. The best are Terry Fator - Ventriloquism. Extremely funny and good value (it's at the Mirage). The Mike Hammer Comedy Magic Show is at the Four Queens and it's a non-stop show full of improv, banter and tricks. You'll get most of the American-based humour and the magic tricks are clever. If you like music but don't want to pay for Elton or Celine, try the Human Nature show at the Imperial Palace Theatre. It's a Motown extravaganza and you'll know every hit. Jersey Boys is the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. It's a brilliant, fun show and has deservedly won a raft of awards. There are three Cirque du Soleil shows to choose from and of course, Elton is still kicking up a storm at the Red Room. If you like a bit of Frank Sinatra, there's plenty of that at the Wolf Theatre.

The Neon Museum - a holiday to Las Vegas is full of quirky stuff that will give you the most amazing talking points back home. The Neon Museum, for example. Yup, a museum dedicated to preserving old neon signs. And you know what? It's fantastic. Head back from your holiday to Las Vegas and show them your pics of this and just watch the tears of laughter!

Getting hitched - Las Vegas holidays are famous for the chapel quickie. So where do you go if you want to tie one on? Try the Chapel of Flowers on the Strip. Three chapels to choose from and nary an Elvis in sight. If you want Elvis, well it's one for the money, two for the show at the Graceland Wedding Chapel, also on the Strip. Let Elvis entertain and entwine you and send you home with a DVD full of memories.

The must see - is out of town. When you need a break from the Strip head out of town to some nature. About 14 miles away is the Red Rock Canyon park. This beautiful spot is the complete antidote to chips, beige and noise with colourful rock formations and plenty of walking trails. You can drive around too and the Visitor Centre staff are very good at telling what you must do and showing you where to go. Keep going north and the Valley of Fire is equally brilliant.
