Welcome to Atlanta

Get ready for some southern fried charm.

Atlanta is situated in the north-western top corner of the southern state of Georgia. It's a major metro city with some five million people and home to giant companies like Coke, Turner Broadcasting and Delta Airlines. As such you'll have no problem locating cheap flights to Georgia. It's something like the ninth most visited city in the US so just jump on Holiday Supermarket and look for your cheap flights to Atlanta.

For the tourist Atlanta works as a kind of segue between the north and the south. The weather is different (warmer), the accent is different and the food is a cross between southern dishes like fried chicken with the occasional northern dish (like pastrami on rye) thrown in.

Atlanta USA is a big and sprawling town. But happily there's plenty to do. The Atlanta Botanical Gardens are an engaging mix of plants, forest, wildflower walks and a specialist orchid centre.

If you want something different on your Atlanta Georgia holiday visit Turner Field, home court to the Atlanta Braves. Basketball is a non-stop, exciting, one end to the other game with action everywhere you look.

Exploring the city is relatively easy - just hop on an ATL-Cruzer - little electric cars that zip the visitor back and forth between the historic and scenic highlights.

Atlanta flights are easy - look up cheap flights to Atlanta on Holiday Supermarket and you're there. All in all, holidays to Atlanta are a fun way to explore the south and are a great stopping off point for something very different on your way to the west coast.

Information & Facts

Climate

Atlanta is a relatively warm city with temps getting to about 30-32C in mid summer and as low as 10-12C in winter. The summers can be hot and humid with afternoon storms and winter has its share of rain too.
Spring and autumn are the drier months and the temps are benign.

Eating Out

Cheap, expensive and everything in between.

The food in Atlanta is unlike the rest of the northern cities you may have travelled too. The emphasis is on more southern-style food, with spices and plenty of barbecues. Ribs and chicken a specialty!

The budget options - the Brick Store pub at 125 E Court Sq is a kind of gastro pub that serves up excellent grilled food. Think upmarket burgers and light meals at a decent price. On 306 W Main St you'll find Rico's World Kitchen. The Filipino influences are in the light soups and stir fries with a bit of southern/soul thrown in.

Mid price options - the Stoney River Legendary Steakhouse doesn't lie. It is a local legend and serves steaks - plenty of 'em, grilled and served to your liking with an excellent selection of sides and salads. Primo stuff at an excellent price. The Woodfire Grill is at 1782 Cheshire Bridge Rd NE and serves up a cross between Californian and the south. Try dishes like the fried green tomato salad.

Splurge - if you love seafood Atlanta will be heaven for you. Chops Lobster Bar is one of the best seafood joints in town and serves up a glittering array of shellfish (and fish) in every combo you can think of. Try the lobster bisque to see how it really should be done!

Sightseeing

Atlanta is southern hospitality

Atlanta is different from the northern cities in that the more temperate climate encourages a lot of outdoor activity. You can dine on the sidewalks, use the parks, and walk from historic site to tourist event with ease. Atlanta may not have the history of somewhere like Boston but it does have fabulous entertainment, excellent food and plenty of shopping.

Georgia Dome - this large stadium is home ground for the Atlanta Falcons football team and it's a great spot to catch a home game in. You can do behind the scenes tours but the best way to enjoy it is to catch a game and revel in the spectacle.

Little Five Points - this bohemian area of Atlanta is a great place to just hang. There are quirky boutiques, great cafes and tasty bars and restaurants. Check out the 7 Stages Theatre, Dad's Garage and the Horizon Theatre.

Atlanta History Centre - if you're here in spring, check out the History Centre in 32 acres of gardens and parks. A historic farm is on site and you can enjoy all manner of exhibits like a fully restored southern mansion, Civil War displays and more.

Atlantic Station - close to the Arts Centre, this unique precinct is full of shops, sidewalk bars and cafes and trendy restaurants. It's a great place to roam for the morning.

Segway touring - Atlanta hosted the 1996 Olympics and the Centennial Olympic Park that resulted is a fabulous outdoor rec area. Go for a blast around the huge precinct on a Segway; see all the sights and enjoy the park at the same time.

Georgia Aquarium - is the largest aquarium in the world so the activities, things to see and animals are bigger, better and more scary than anywhere else! It’s downtown so easy to get to and the dolphin show is out of this world. The ocean exhibits and marine life displays are comprehensive and visually spectacular.
