Welcome to St Julians

St Julian's  - Maltese charm personified!

The charming coastal haven of St Julian's truly brings those romantic notions of a sun-kissed holiday in the sun to life. It lies just to the north of capital city Valetta and, like much of Malta, exudes a remarkable Crusader history that rewards the inquisitive visitor well.

The tourist area of Paceville features the hotels, restaurants and nightclubs that we've all come to expect, but should you want a quieter style holiday, St Julian's can supply that as well, and Holiday Supermarket can recommend hotel options that will suit you better. They also have plenty of cheap flights to Malta available.

The horseshoe bay of St George's has plenty of popular hotels that take full advantage of the extraordinary beauty of St Julian's and the turquoise sea that disappears into the blue horizon. The sun-bleached stone of the older architecture blends well with myriad fishing boats and the crystalline sea. Many of the hotels have taken the Crusader history to heart and have styled themselves around this unique aspect of Maltese culture - for example, the Hilton Hotel with its Moorish arches and squared windows.

You have your pick of beaches here, and the town itself is a pleasure to roam. The food in St Julian's is very good and takes full advantage of the fresh seafood available daily.

Information & Facts

Climate

St Julian's, like much of Malta, has a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. The summers are dry with the occasional cold winds in spring. January averages around 20C during the day while summer sees average temps of about 28 - 34C. Perfect beach weather all year round!

Eating Out

Cheap, expensive and everything in between

The cuisine style of Malta takes in all the influences that have travelled through the island state over the last 800 years or so. Southern Italian flavours vie with the Greek appetite for fresh seafood. The occasional Moorish spice sneaks in. All in all, mealtimes are a very pleasant voyage of discovery.

The budget options - there are quite a few moderately priced restaurants in Paceville and one of the local favourites is The Avenue on Triq Gort. It's big and busy, but the service and food are excellent for the style of place it is.

Mid price options -if you're hankering for some excellent Indian food, try Shiva's on Dragonara Rd. All your favourites are there like Rogan josh, balti, tandoori, masalas, and they're all freshly made that day. The usual accompaniments are good - the parathas, the naans, the chapatis, the poppadums.

Splurge -Malta is well known for its excellent seafood and Sciacci at Triq Santu Wistin is building a reputation as a great fish restaurant. They're in the 'party' area of St Julian's but don't let that put you off. They're taking the long view that service; quality ingredients and skilled chefs will bring customers back year after year.

Sightseeing

St Julian's  - a beautiful location
Situated on the gorgeous bay of St George just north of Valetta, St Julian's offers a typical Maltese outlook - turquoise ocean, creamy sandstone escarpments and Crusader monument, forts and towers seemingly everywhere. St Julian's is an excellent place to base yourself for a holiday and then branch out to the many things the island offers.

Spinola Bay  - this beautiful little bay offers a tremendous walk for the adventurous with the rewards of a couple of good restaurants at the end. It's a little fishing village close to St Julian's and you can look back across the water to Valetta from Sliema (your eventual destination on the walk).

Crusader ruins  - Malta is blessed with many historic sites, some dating back to Roman times. As such, using St Julian's as a base, you can venture out to extraordinary sites in a hire car for the day.

Spinola Palace  - Spinola Palace was built in 1688 by the Grand Prior of Lombardy. It was renovated and enlarged in 1733 and many of the gardens replanted. Take a walk up tho the palace gates and take a peek through the wrought iron - it's quite something.

Mellieha Bay- contrary to popular misconceptions, Malta does have beaches - and one of the best is Mellieha Bay. It's about a 45 minute bus trip (number 645) from Paceville and boasts a long, sandy stretch of golden sand that reaches down to the placid blue water.
