Welcome to Qawra

Qawra

Qawra  - plenty of nightlife!

Just 17 short kilometres north of Valetta lies the sunny little town of Qawra, basking in the Bay of St Paul. The summers are generally hot and the beer cold; the food filling and the water sports inspiring. Yes! Qawra is where you can engage in those hedonistic pursuits that involve getting out of the deck chair and out on to the water, or under it.

Qawra is home to the region's best water sports - with banana boat rides for the kids and speedboat runs for dad. And with those summer temps you'll love the balmy ocean currents. Because it's well catered for tourist town, Qawra consistently enjoys new activities being added to the list of things to do.

You can scuba dive in the morning, exploring the lovely bay and enjoy some fine dining later that night, followed by a night out clubbing. Qawra is a party town, although slightly quieter than neighbouring Bugibba. You can enjoy a great night out here without the chaos and that's worth its weight in gold.

Holiday Supermarket has plenty of Malta holidays, including loads of discount rooms in Qawra - and you can also book your flights to Malta here too.

Make sure you enjoy the town square and go and see St Frances of Assisi Church. And for the history buffs, you can dine an old Crusader tower.

Information & Facts

Climate

Qawra, like much of Malta, has a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. The summers are dry with the occasional cold winds in spring. January averages around 20C during the day while summer sees average temps of about 28 - 34C. Perfect beach weather all year round!

Eating Out

Cheap, expensive and everything in between

The food in Qawra is generally to the large tourist population. You'll find food from home here as well as local dishes. The local influences are Italian and Greek and this is reflected in the plentiful seafood and 'fast' dishes like Pizza.

The budget options - there's plenty to choose from in this range and it's all good. The Woodhut Pub & Dinner serves familiar fare and if you want something simple, yet tasty, this is your spot - and a great range of beers too. The Knickerbocker Cafe is worth a visit, especially for the excellent breakfasts.

Mid price options -Any of the pub meals are quite reasonable value, but for a relatively posh meal try the Overflow near the Santana Hotel. Good ambience, good service and excellent food.

Splurge -all restaurants in Qawra are actually rather good value. For a more upmarket locale try Incognito - more because of the many locals who frequent the place. It's on Fliegu Street.

Sightseeing

Qawra  - a taste of home with better weather!

The main square of Qawra is really the main square of adjoining village, Bugibba. This is where you'll find most of the action. Qawra, Bugibba and St Pauls are all old fishing villages that were once tiny fishing villages centred around the Bay, which have now had tourist hotels planted at the edges and been combined in to one, medium-sized, town.  The main square has several restaurants, the ubiquitous cafes and a selection of good pubs and clubs for late night activities.

The Promenade  - the waterfront area boasts magic views of the sparkling harbour, bobbing fishing boats and is where most people gather of an evening. Walking the promenade builds a hearty appetite and you can stop at one of the myriad bars for a cleansing ale.

See some history- the local church is called St Paul's Bonfire and it dates back several centuries, equally worth a look is the 1609 Wignacourt, once part of a chain of signal towers that protected the islands from invaders.

Travel further afield  - using Qawra as your base, it's easy to hire a car and pop into the hinterland or drive the coastal route to see not only the glorious views but the remains of Roman villas, mediaeval towers and ancient tombs.

Swim off the rocks  - the coastal area around Qawra may not have a beach, but there are dozens of spots to throw a towel on a flat rock and use this as a platform to jump into the clear blue sea, unimpeded by crowds and frisbee throwing youths.
