Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic and boasts a beautifully rich history. In Prague, you can enjoy a huge variety of museums, galleries and theatres as well as of course the largest ancient castle in the world. Everywhere you turn in Prague, you get the feeling that you’re in a magical land in some sort of fairytale; beauty is all around. For example cross the Charles Bridge and you will soon be faced with a magnificent scene. The castle, palace, monastery and cathedral are all there before your eyes.
Prague has built up a reputation over the years of being a musical city and many tourists like to visit the city for the Prague Spring Festival which is world class. Aside from this, tourists enjoy Prague for its natural beauty and its rich culture. In fact, the city is one of the six most visited cities in Europe.
Prague Attractions
The city as a whole, has a rather magical feel to it. It feels charming and fascinating with its bridges, towers, churches and grand buildings all perfectly complemented with quaint cobbled lanes and the swan-filled river.
Prague is split into a few different sections. The first is the Old Town and is the oldest part of Prague. This part of the city used to be separated by walls which can still be traced today. The Old town Square is a popular meeting place for visitors to the city.
The New Town comprises of buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Wenceslas Square is where people gather in the New Town and there are plenty of events going on here all of the time. Lucerna Palace is an entertainment complex consisting of restaurants, a cinema, theatre and some shops.
Mala Strana is known as the Lesser Town and lies on the western bank of the river Vltava. This area boasts some pretty surroundings as well as interesting boutique shops, churches and plenty of restaurants. This is where Prague Castle is and it is also where you can find Lennon Wall. This was named after John Lennon after his death and Lennon inspired graffiti now decorates the entire wall.
Weather in Prague
Prague experiences a typical European climate. The summers are warm and the winters are relatively cold. Temperatures in the summer months are normally around 20 degrees and in the winter time they dip very low to one or two degrees.
Eating in Prague
The food in Prague is fairly simple and you will often be served pork or beef based dishes. These will usually come with dumplings or potatoes. One of the most popular dishes with the locals is Svickova which is a strange but tasty recipe of meat with sauce and whipped cream. For pudding, many visitors like to try Czech pancakes and there are always the fruit dumplings to try.
Travel in Prague
Getting around in Prague is no problem at all. With an effective metro system, as well as trams and buses to take you from place to place, you should be able to get to most areas of interest on public transport with no problems. To make it even easier for tourists to get around, there is the option to buy a tourist pass which you can use on any type of public transport as much as they like while the pass is valid.
The great thing about Prague though, is that you can easily explore it on foot. And there are always cafes and restaurants dotted around to stop off at for a rest.
Things not to miss in Prague
1. Prague Castle has over 1100 years of history to explore and it is one of the most popular and fascinating sites in Prague.
2. Zidovske Muzeum is made up of six museum sites and you can have access to all of them by buying one ticket from one of the venues.
3. Zizkov Tower is a huge television tower made up of three pillars. From the eight floor, there is a spectacular view of the city and you can even stop off at the fifth floor cafe for a refreshing drink and a rest.
4. The Ocecni dum is built around the Smetana Hall, which is where the Prague Symphony Orchestra is based. The orchestra launches Prague Spring here in this beautiful building which can be admired for its art nouveau architecture.
5. The Astronomical Clock can be seen on the side of the Old Town Hall in old Town Square. It’s a beautiful sight and one popular with visitors to the city.
6. The National Museum is one of the biggest museums in Prague and is hugely popular with visitors to the city. There are around 14 million items to see in this museum so it’s a fascinating journey through history.
7. St Vitus Cathedral is the biggest church in the Czech Republic and it is also a great place to visit if you want to see Gothic architecture at its best.
8. Within the grounds of Prague castle, you can find The Golden Lane. This charming little street is lined with tiny little houses from the 16th century. The reason that they are so small is because these houses were built for marksmen who guarded the castle. But there was not enough space to build a full sized house for each of the 24 marksmen so the houses had to be made incredibly small.
