Nice holidays

Nice – full of glitz and glamour

If there’s one thing that French cities do well, it’s charm. And that’s certainly the case with Nice. This city has become a favourite for Brits. They come on Nice holidays with the family and many decide to move here permanently.

The pretty landscape, the clear sea waters, the long beaches and best of all; the sunshine instantly make visitors fall in love with this charming destination which is located on the French Riviera

Situated on the French Riviera near Marseille, Nice is one of the leading resorts in the south of France. The English started coming here in the 18th century to spend the winter – drawn by the sublime Mediterranean climate and glorious setting which remain huge attractions to this day. Nice is, of course, focused on its beach, the famous Promenade des Anglais and is largely about seeing and being seen. There are lots of wonderful squares in the town itself, and plenty of interesting architecture with stacks of historical sites in the city, and the surrounding area. With budget flights and a range of accommodation on offer, you don’t have to earn as much as a film star to enjoy a taste of their lifestyle.

Nice Holidays

It can be difficult to strike the right balance when it comes to city breaks. Often, travellers will want to experience the history and culture of a city, but also want to find time to relax. This is where Nice has things just right. The fantastic combination of architecture, art, shops and fine dining with the peaceful and serene sun soaked beaches is enough to satisfy anyone’s quest for the perfect holiday.

Nice attractions

The quaint streets of the old town in Nice are what attract a lot of people to come on holidays to Nice. The 18th century cobbled streets are lined with restaurants and cafes as well as some attractive little shops.

It’s always essential to take a stroll along the Promenade des Anglais during any holidays in Nice. In the 18th century, rich English people who spent their winters in Nice proposed a project to beggars in the area; to build a walkway along the sea. And the Promenade des Anglais has proved a popular venture ever since, providing visitors with a pleasant walkway along the stunning sea front. Now, the promenade is always bustling full of visitors trying to catch some sun and locals going for a run as well as street vendors and inviting restaurants.

A lot of visitors love the glitz and glamour of holidays in Nice. But for those who don’t want to spend their days lazing on the beach and taking leisurely lunches there’s plenty of action to keep you entertained including hikes and water sports.

If you’ve got some cash to splash then the shopping in Nice really is second to none. The charming boutiques and the local markets are all packed full of treats from designer gear to unique creations and souvenirs to take home.

As well as being a beautiful holiday destination in itself, Nice offers the perfect base if you want to travel elsewhere. Cannes is only 30 minutes away from your Nice holidays on the train or for something completely different, head for Sospel which is an Alpine village offering some great outdoor activities.

Eating in Nice

As with any destination in France, the food in Nice doesn’t disappoint. Each region in the country has a different way of preparing food and it is immediately clear that the Nice way of cooking is heavily influenced by Spanish and Italian traditions. Along the Promenade de Anglais, you can find plenty of restaurants to choose from, with some offering some local specialities and all offering a beautiful sea view. Pizza and pasta is a popular dish around here but sea food is particularly delicious in this area. And of course, no one can resist the plentiful vendors offering ice cream and refreshing sorbet by the sea.

Weather in Nice

The Mediterranean climate means that Nice boasts warm temperatures for most of the year. For this reason, it’s easy to see why so many people choose holidays to Nice. The summers can be very hot with temperatures regularly hitting 30 degrees during these months. And temperatures remain in their 20s until November when they start to cool and rain becomes more likely.

Transport in Nice

Buses are reliable and efficient in Nice offering a good service for tourists. The Sunbus is particularly useful when you are trying to get to the popular spots. You can hop on and off these buses as much as you like with a one day ticket, meaning the Sunbus is one of the easiest ways to travel on your Nice holidays. If you have a family, you may wish to consider a trip on Le Petit Train, which will take you on a 45 minute tour of Nice.

Things not to miss in Nice

1. If you’re looking for art, then the Musee d’Art Contemporain is a great place to start. Here you will find a collection of avant garde art including that of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

2. There’s plenty of culture to go around on holidays to Nice and if you’re looking for an interesting way to spend the afternoon, the Musee National Message Biblique Marc Chagall boasts a fascinating collection of Chagall paintings. These paintings are inspired by biblical stories and are truly fascinating.

3. Nice’s six-domed Russian Orthodox Cathedral is a highlight of the city. The architecture of this building is like no other and looks truly magical from the outside. The Russian aristocracy used Nice as a getaway and they have certainly left their mark on the city with this elegant and unusual building.

4. For the real French market experience, take a wander around the Cours Saleya Flower Market which is a market located in the old city near the beach. 6. If you are planning a visit to Le Chateau in Nice, then you need to be sure that you have packed one essential item: your camera.
