Car-free Wengen
Wengen is a holiday resort in Switzerland at the foot of the Eiger-Monch-Jungfrau mountain range and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jungfrau.
This holiday resort originally sprung up from just one small guesthouse, opened simply to cater for the travellers from Lauterbrunnen who were simply passing through on their way to Grindelwald. This little guesthouse became so popular in the 1890’s that another thirty resorts sprang up in the following twenty years.
Naturally, the tourism dried up during the war but continued afterwards with the addition of cable-cars, chairlifts and a railway network. It is to this day a car-free area, something people claim you can tell when breathing the air. (more…)
