Lisbon For A City Break
Lisbon is perfect for a bargain holiday or short city break to Portugal, although a few days may not seem enough when you begin to explore this European city.
Lisbon is a harbour town at the mouth of the river Tagus (Tejo) and you cannot miss the Praca do Comercio square with its distinguished buildings at the riverfront. The harbour is still in use today as it has been for over 3,000 years. Portugal was an incredibly wealthy nation in the fifteenth century as the harbour was used on the sea route to India and made huge profits. However, by the seventeeth century Portugal was in decline.
In 1755 Lisbon was hit by an earthquake and severely damaged, indeed, as a port it never recovered but is now more of a city break destination and an attractive tourist destination. Lisbon has everything from Art Nouveau buildings to high rise buildings, pretty mosaic pavements and bright tiles cover much of its architecture. You should take the time to visit the monastery of Sao Vicente and the gloriously landscaped parks and there are beautiful panoramic scenes from the top of the hills. There is also the church of Sao Roque and the National Museum to visit for just a small entrance fee.
There are also the usual boat trips to sunbathe, swim or to go fishing and the local hotels look after their visitors. Flights and car hire prices are also very competitive, making Lisbon an ideal city break for anyone.
