Exploring Geneva, Switzerland

Geneva is a glorious city in South Switzerland, close to the French border. It is renowned worldwide for its expensive watches and Swiss chocolate, but there is so much more to see and do.

Geneva is the perfect luxury holiday for those searching for a scenic break. Lake Geneva is one of the largest lakes in Europe, more than 582 sq km (225 square miles). You can see its clear azure waters from a boat or steam ship, which run from the landside quays from Easter to October. Both Lord Byron and Shelley made pilgrimages here.

Its history is evident throughout the city, from the medieval St-Pierre cathedral, excavations dating back to the fourth century, the Palais de Nations Assembly Hall (originally home to the League of Nations) and the city’s museums, full of modern and post-modern art.

The Swiss are ingenious people. They even turned an old overflow valve from a hydroelectric station into a fountain in 1891. To this day, it still attracts people to the lake to watch it spurt its water over 140 metres (459 feet) into the air.

Naturally, no trip to Geneva would be complete without trying the Swiss chocolate, which tastes even better from a local fondue whilst overlooking the lake, but if you are looking for a luxury holiday, this has to be on your list.
