Florida and Miami remain top destination choices

Filed under: Florida, General, Las Vegas, Miami, New York — Tim on July 29, 2009 @ 9:40 am

According to a new survey, it seems that the likes of Florida and Miami remain top destination choices for British holidays as the United States continues to top the bill despite uncertainty over the economy.

Over 10 per cent of people questions in the survey selected America as their top holiday destination. The results are perhaps unsurprising as America has remained highly popular for holidays with British people, partly due to the popularity of Disney World Florida and the attractions of New York, as well as the likes of Las Vegas, making it appealing for singles, family holidays and city breaks.

The most confident of those surveyed were business travellers and men in general were also more likely to pick the US as their top destination, with 14 per cent of men compared to just nine per cent of women selecting the US.

The survey from M&SFS questioned 2,000 people about where they would most like to take their holidays at the moment and it seemed the prospect of long haul flights was not putting them off with Australia in second place.

Spain came in third place followed then by the UK itself. For shorter breaks and holidays, France was most popular.

Using the New York CityPass

Those travellers who want to take city breaks, or longer holidays in New York this year, are being encouraged to make use of the summer special offers being promoted by the company that runs the CityPass scheme in New York City.

CityPass is a scheme that offers discounts tickets to attractions throughout the city of New York allowing holidaymakers to take advantage of lower prices that can be up to 44 per cent lower than regular prices.

The promotion includes a number of New York’s most famous attractions worldwide including the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum.

Adults can purchase a CityPass booklet from any of the attractions of the visitor centre of Seventh Avenue, just north from Times Square for just $79 (£49).

In addition, a new mobile application was launched this year allowing people to download information to their iPhone.

CityPass is not only limited to New York but also offers discount attraction schemes in other cities in Canada and the United States, including Toronto and San Francisco.

New York City breaks are still popular

Those British holidaymakers looking for city breaks in New York during the summer this year might be able to take advantage of a new accommodation offer giving a third night for free in some hotels.

The New York’s state tourist board revealed earlier this month that around 250 hotels are taking part, including a wide range of quality hotels and lodges.

Lyndsey Thomas, PR manager for the state tourist board’s UK office, said:

“From the beauty and tranquility of the great outdoors to the vibrancy of its cities, New York State features unique destinations, stunning scenery and exciting adventures. Whether it’s taking a wine tour through the Finger Lakes, lounging by the ocean on Long Island, skiing in the Catskill Mountains, or visiting one of the many cultural sights in the Hudson Valley, any international visitor planning a visit to the Big Apple should venture out into other regions of this fantastically diverse state.”

Other promotions are also going to be on offer through the New York tourist board as they team up with Enterprise Rent-A-Car and the rail provider Amtrak to give offers encouraging people to incorporate more of the state of New York in their city breaks.

Those looking for holidays in New York can fly from most major UK airports with a range of air carriers including British Airways and Continental Airlines.

The United States remain the top holiday destination

Filed under: Las Vegas, New York, USA — Emma on July 16, 2009 @ 11:03 am

Despite the drop in the value of sterling over the last twelve months, research from the International Currency Exchange (ICE) shows that the US is still one of the top destinations for Brits.

According to Ice, the British pound fell by 17.5 per cent versus the US dollar in the last twelve months, however, orders for the US dollar still increased by 105 per cent in the last quarter.

The most popular currency is still the Euro, however, as the Turkish lira and Croatian kuna were still in the top six. This indicates Brits still have an interest in other European destinations.

Andrew Hamilton, head of marketing for Ice, said:

“Over the last 12 months, the top three currencies ordered online remain unchanged, with the euro accounting for 55% of orders, while US dollar orders jumped from 18% in June 2008 to 30% this year. The pound has recovered against the euro by 12%, but it is still down compared to 12 months ago. This means UK holidaymakers are flocking to the likes of Turkey and Croatia, pushing up sales of these currencies.”

The US is still a top holiday destination for Brits, helped somewhat by New York, one of the top destinations for city breaks and other top holidays in the US such as Las Vegas.

New York festival for Jazz fans

Filed under: New York — Tim on July 15, 2009 @ 4:52 pm

Music fans seeking city breaks in New York might want to check out next month’s New York Charlie Parker Jazz Festival.

August will see the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival open in Tompkins Square Park and Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park; both are places where Charlie Parker himself used to work and live.

Each year, this jazz festival celebrates the genius of this jazz legend for whom is it named. The festival brings top names in the jazz genre together for one great annual celebration and this year will be no different.

The programme this year starts on the 29th August in Marcus Garvey Park. Jose James, Gary Bartz and the Frank Wess Quintet are just a few of the top names set to appear.

On the 30th August, the festival will continue in Tompkins Square Park. Top names due to appear include the Dred Scott trio, Pyeng Threadgill and the pianist Cedar Walton, who will front a quartet.

Another top music attraction in New York this summer will be the Central Park SummerStage festival running til the 16th August, giving just another reason why New York is one of the world’s most popular destination for city breaks.

Visit New York to see Jude Law play Hamlet

Filed under: London, New York — Emma on July 8, 2009 @ 3:43 pm

It has recently been announced that the Donmar West End production of Hamlet, still currently on show at London’s Wyndham Theatre, is to transfer to New York later this year and there will be many lucky people on city breaks in New York wanting to take the opportunity to view this one.

Jude Law is to continue his role as the lead character, Hamlet, of the Shakespeare tragedy and when the show moves to Broadway in New York on the 12th September at the Broadhurst Theatre he will continue that role.

The remainder of the London cast is also to remain in the show for its three month stint in New York, which includes Claudius played by Kevin McNally.

Michael Grandage, Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse, said:

“Following our recent productions of Frost/Nixon and Mary Stuart, I am delighted we have been invited to bring another of our productions to Broadway. We feel very privileged to be part of such a vibrant theatre community and it is exciting to think that so many people will get to engage with our work and to witness Jude Law’s extraordinary performance.”

For those wanting city breaks a little closer to home, Hamlet is to continue in London until the 22nd August when it will be replaced by the stage show of The Shawshank Redemption which will open on 13th September.
