A new project has recently been announced by Sri Lanka Tourism who will be increasing their appeal to holiday makers across the world, when it develops a host of new travel destinations across the country.
The project is set to make Sri Lanka ‘one of the most sought after holiday destinations in South Asia’, and will include an initiative to develop the Kalpitiya islands which lie 150km to the north of Colombo.
Over the course of the next ten to twelve years, the most suitable islands for attracting tourists will be selected and then upgraded and revitalised, in order to help support Sri Lanka’s sustainable tourism and further help the destination attract a wide variety of visitor profiles.
Some of the new destinations have been highlighted as; marine sanctuaries, botanical gardens and great opportunities for holiday makers to enjoy wildlife, including dolphins, whales and birds.
Speaking on behalf of Sri Lanka Tourism, Bernard Goonetilleke said:
“This project will not only develop the area which has hitherto been unexplored, but also provide employment to the people in the area, provide livelihood to the fishermen and improve the economic situation of Kalpitiya.”
It is expected that the new initiative will make Sri Lanka a considerably more prominent area in the south Asia holiday scene.
According to reports from Sri Lanka Tourism, the island of Sri Lanka is to be at the centre of sustainable tourism in forthcoming years primarily because of its environmental initiatives and its biological diversity.
