The Reggae Sumfest in Jamaica is estimated to bring in around 5,000 holiday makers a year.
Jamaica’s Reggae Sumfest has lived up to the two awards it has just received, which are ‘Concert of the year’ and ‘Promoter of the Year.’
Reggae Sumfest takes place within Montego Bay and hosts world known performers who take to the huge stages. This event has established itself as the reggae event of the summer and the vibrancy, music and colours it offers gives out a fantastic carnival atmosphere.
Spread across four full nights of partying, it launches with a beach party on Sunday 19th July 2009 and will feature top DJ’s and stunning sound systems. On Thursday 23rd July, dancehall night takes place and Friday and Saturday nights are the festivals’ international nights, which include a large range of stars from across the globe, along with local talent.
Marketing Manager for Sumfest, Marcia McDonnough said:
“The Tourist board survey also revealed that next to word of mouth, the internet is the medium from which most visitors got their information. So, we have decided to increase our efforts in using this medium. We expect it to be a major promotional tool, not only for Reggae Sumfest but for Reggae and Brand Jamaica as a whole. So far the statistics show that persons are logging on from places such as Norway, Kenya, Spain, Latvia as well as the traditional names we are accustomed to. Of course USA, UK, Japan and Canada remain in the top of the list for visits. We therefore expect our foreign audience to grow even larger this year.”
The Blue Lagoon, is the swimming hole just outside Port Antonio in Jamaica where Brooek Shields was shipwrecked with Christopher Atkins in the film of the same name, The Blue Lagoon, in the 1980’s.
It is a large, beautiful cove with deep waters, of a gorgeous emerald-green and azure coloured water. Rain is moderate throughout the year, falling fairly evenly and the temperatures tend to be around 38C (86F) in the day and 20C (68F) at night.
The waters are around 56 m (185 feet) deep and the cove was created by underground mineral springs fed from the Blue Mountains - you can even watch as the bubbles surface to the ground. Whilst swimming you will feel streams of warm and streams of cold water and will feel like the only person on earth.
On the banks, sufficiently far enough away, there is a dive shop that rents out kayaks and scuba diving equipment and a restaurant. You can also swim in the nearby Somerset Falls, which is a short stroll away. You could even take a canoe trip down there. Jamaica is a truly luxury holiday destination and the Blue Lagoon is one of its relatively unknown attractions, well worth a visit.
