Bargains in the Caribbean

The time is about right for travelling to the Caribbean; winter is over, the kids have gone back to school and the rainy season has yet to come, warm days and empty beaches. Perfect!  No So!  With confidence returning in the travel trade, it seems that does not apply to the Caribbean.  Bookings to Jamaica have dropped sharply not only for the recession but also because of the gun battles reported in the news recently (2010).

This has had an impact on the entire area as people cannot differentiate islands and the Caribbean.   As well as the Americans staying away, reports from Barbados, a firm British favourite, suggest empty resorts as well.

Does this mean bargains?  Of course!

Why holidays in Jamaica?

Holidays to Jamaica have become more popular in recent years with the Brits and with tourists worldwide, and it is easy to see why.

There are the Blue Mountains and rolling hills, coral reefs and white, sandy beaches. Dunn’s River Falls are amazing with a view to take your breath away. Jamaica is one of the most popular areas of the Caribbean and is the third largest Caribbean island, including popular resorts such as Montego Bay and Kingston.

Montego Bay is the most lively resort with bars, shops, water sports and parasailing as well as a wealth of other activities. Negril is much more relaxed with seven miles of golden beaches.

For those seeking shopping on city breaks, then Ocho Rios is probably the best bet with duty free shopping and plenty of attractions.

Watch out for the Jazz Festival in January and the Bob Marley celebration in February as two great events to visit for alone. Flights from London Gatwick take around 10 hours and the currency is the Jamaican dollar.

Holidays in Jamaica are like a trip to paradise, and if recent reports that Brits want experiences in their holidays are true, then you could do no better with options such as bamboo rafting, swimming with dolphins and diving with the fish.

New aircraft for BA means new flights to Las Vegas

Filed under: Jamaica, Las Vegas, Sharm El Sheikh — Adam on June 18, 2009 @ 10:07 am

Earlier this month, British Airways started to operate flights with its new long haul air plane to be introduced to the BA fleet in almost eight years.

The new Boeing 777-200ER aircraft was delivered to the airline earlier this year and has been prepared for flight duty at the Cardiff Airport’s British Airways Maintenance Cardiff (BAMC) centre.

The new plane has had new in-flight entertainment systems installed along with BA’s World Traveller and Club World products. This month the Boeing 777-200ER will start running flights to Washington.

Garry Copeland, the airline’s director of engineering, said: ‘Our engineers in Cardiff have done a fantastic job in preparing the new aircraft for service. These were some of the most complex modifications ever carried out at BAMC but once again they have risen to the challenge. Their work will help us to continue to deliver the high levels of customer service our customers expect.’

British Airways is set to receive another three Boeing 777-200 aircraft later this year.

Thanks to this new expansion of the fleet, BA will be able to extend its flights to Las Vegas, Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt and Jamaica amongst other great destinations for holidays.

Jamaica the number one holiday destination for affordability

In terms of affordability, Jamaica is the number one destination for holidays for the Brits according to research that calculated affordability on a currency basis.

The International Currency Exchange (Ice) based its research on the recent fluctuations in exchanges rates and discovered that the British sterling strengthened in value by just under 24 per cent versus the Jamaican dollar in 2009.

The next holiday destinations on the list were Iceland whose Krona lost 23 per cent in value versus sterling followed by Poland in third place when the Polish zloty fell by 19 per cent in value against the sterling.

Next was the Hungarian florint followed by the yuan in China, as sterling strengthened by 17 per cent and almost 13 per cent respectively.

Ice head of marketing Andrew Hamilton said:

“Jamaica offers the best of a lot of worlds for holidaymakers - sun, great beaches and fantastic value against the pound. But closer to home we’re seeing some real holiday hotspots emerge offering fantastic value for money - notably Croatia, Turkey and Bulgaria.”

Earlier this year, Ice released figures showing that the euro was the most popular currency for Brits closely followed by the US dollar and then the baht from Thailand.

New flights from British Airways

Filed under: Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jamaica, Las Vegas, Maldives, Sharm El Sheikh — Adam on June 2, 2009 @ 3:29 pm

The Maldives and Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt are just two of the holiday destinations that will be receiving new flights from British Airways this winter as the airway carrier extends its winter flight schedule.

Sharm el Sheikh and the Maldives extra flights will commence on the 25th October and will fly three weekly services from London’s Gatwick airport.

It is the first service British Airways has run to the Maldives and it will be flying to Male, whilst the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh spells a return for the airline.

According to the British Airways head of UK & Ireland Sales, Richard Tams, these extra services will be ‘a real winner with customers’ who can benefit from direct holidays to these destinations. He stated:

“They are both perfect holiday destinations, known for their great beaches and fantastic diving. We’re particularly pleased to be serving a completely new destination, the Maldives, and returning to Sharm El Sheikh. We expect both routes to perform well.”

Other destinations to receive new flights from British Airways include the Dominic Republic, Jamaica and Las Vegas, also due to start in October.
