It seems that thanks to the global recession, city breaks worldwide are generally cheaper than last year according to a Times Online report.
The report shows that figures from a study of 50 worldwide cities suggest that prices this year have fallen by up to 31 per cent since last summer.
The largest price drop appears to be in Spain, with city breaks in Madrid and Barcelona showing the greatest price drop, closely followed by Granada and Valencia.
For those British holidaymakers thinking prices may drop further however, Spanish hoteliers claim prices could now drop any further. Holiday deals in Spain are particularly well priced at the moment as Spain is suffering in the recession.
Similar reductions are being seen in other countries, such as Italy where city breaks to Rome are now 7 per cent lower, and cheap holidays are available in Bologna and Turin with prices at 19 per cent and 12 per cent lower than last year.
City breaks in places such as Venice, Milan, Florence, Geneva, London and Athens are maintaining their prices in comparison to twelve months ago.
With recent surveys showing that Brits are not being put off their summer holidays by the recession, it seems there are some great city breaks to be had at bargain prices.
Rome, the capital of Italy, is one of the most popular city break holiday destinations for Brits. Those lucky enough to be seeking holiday deals in the city for July will have the chance to view a new Miracle Players theatre production at the Roman Forum, offering a different take on the life of Michelangelo.
Miracle Players performs every summer in the Roman Forum and is an English-speaking troupe of actors. For this new production, the troupe has said Michelangelo is: “a man so famous that he doesn’t need his surname to define him, a bit like Cher, although without the hair.”
The production lasts 40 minutes with just four actors offering quirky acts showing the famous and significant moments of Michelangelo’s life, the artist renowned the world over for his sculpture David and his painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The performance is running every Friday until the 7th August at the Roman Forum behind the Capitoline Square, one of Rome’s most famous tourist attractions and the place that was the centre of the great civilisation centuries before.
The opportunity to take a city break to Rome is one not to be passed up.
Over the May bank holiday weekend the country saw a huge 1.8 million British people decide to take an overseas holiday, claims the travel association ABTA.
The favourite holiday destination for British people was Spain and this proved to be the most popular, with people taking holidays from the UK between 22nd and 25th May, which was the start of the half term break for schools in Britain.
During the May bank holiday period, the five favourite city break destinations that proved to be the most popular were; Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, New York and Rome said ABTA.
The top of the list for long haul holidays over the May bank holiday was Florida, with Turkey and Egypt being the next popular destinations with visitors who travelled outside of the euro zone.
The president of ABTA, Justin Fleming said: “In spite of the recession, passenger numbers this bank holiday weekend are very healthy, showing that the British love affair with foreign travel is as strong as ever.”
ABTA also released statistics from research conducted earlier this year which highlighted that 68 percent of British people were still prepared to spend the same amount of money on their 2009 holidays than they were the previous year despite the economic downturn.
The new film ‘Angels and Demons’ starring Tom Hanks, which is getting much press attention at the moment is the sequel to ‘The Da Vinci Code’.

The new Lufthansa Italia subsidiary is another focus in the carrier’s currently planned operations and it is soon to launch a number of new domestic Italian flight services to Naples, Rome and Bari from Milan.
