Thorrablot, Iceland

For those who are more adventurous travelers and also have an unusual and open minded taste towards food with a stronger constitution than most, then you could do well looking at flights to Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland for the famous Thorrablot midwinter feast.

There are a number of unusual options which you are likely to be offered throughout this event and each will be dedicated to the traditional Hakarl, which is Viking food. In the past this has been rotten shark dishes, there was the famous event where Gordon Ramsay tried the dish during his TV show The F Word and he vomited live on television.

Any visitor can join the Icelandic locals boil a sheep’s head and cook congealed sheep’s blood inside a ram’s stomach.

Enjoy shots of Brennivin, or otherwise known as ‘black death’ it consists of very potent varieties of schnapps.

The Thorrablot festival will be celebrated between 25 January and 23 February and sees many famous restaurants around Reykjavik, including the most famous two ‘Restaurant Reykjavik’ and Mulakaffi’, adding unusual traditional dishes to their menus to celebrate the Viking traditions.

The Thorrablot Festive begins with a huge midwinter feast where Icelanders serve regular Viking food of the day but turned back to more nature made food which was smoked, and laden in mysa (which is a soured milk product), salted and dried kaestur. Later in these celebratory evenings there will be Icelandic dancing and drinking which will continue to the early morning.

Flights to and from Iceland can be found for very competitive prices online at the moment.

Iceland’s Light Shows

Reykjavik is a great city, the capital of Iceland, where you can wander for hours and hours in broad daylight admiring the architecture or taking a whale and dolphin spotting tour.

Those who plan to visit in autumn or winter this year will see some amazing light displays, as Iceland puts on two fantastic exhibitions.

The first is the Imagine Peace Tower, built in the city to pay tribute to John Lennon and the lights will be switched on by Yoko Ono later this month.

The tower is inscribed with ‘imagine peace’ in over twenty different languages and am amazing 20 metre high beam in white light will be seen all over the city.  The tower is built in Videy Island, which can be reached via ferry from Reykjavik.  The light will be seen from John Lennon’s birthday on the 9th October, through to the 8th December this year, the date of his death.  It will also be shone on New Year’s Eve and the first week of spring, ideal for those holidaymakers looking for flights to somewhere different to welcome in the New Year.

Another light show for visitors to enjoy is the Northern Lights, a natural phenomenon that can be viewed from October through to March and is an ambition of many to view them.  The lights can be seen on clear nights, only when the temperature is below zero degrees Celsius, because the country is so close to the North Pole so wrap up warm.
