Santiago de Cuba: The Fire Fiesta

Holiday makers visiting Cuba this year will be pleased to know that the annual Fire Fiesta, which is one of Cuba’s biggest street parties, is due to launch in July 2009. The festival comprises of a raunchy week long street party known to the locals as Fiesta del Fuego and it all happens in Santiago on Cuba’s east coast.

The festivities include an all night dancing and drinking party which celebrates Caribbean culture and will be awash with a constant supply of the famous Cuban Havana Club rum.

Thousands of holiday makers flock each year for one of the largest festivals in the area and the chance to see traditional Cuban bands and enjoy the distinct party music along with huge sound systems that kick out international dance music. It is traditional to decorate your vehicle during the festival and dancers are colourfully dressed. Stalls line the streets and port products are amongst the most popular with the locals.

There is entertainment for children including one popular ride which sees children pulled in little carts by goats.

Santiago de Cuba has been described as ‘the first city of the revolution’ and such as with all good revolutionaries, Santiaguerros are known for their ability to throw a good party.
