Brits searching for cheap last minute holidays

Filed under: Canary Islands, Portugal, Spain, Tenerife — Emma on June 1, 2009 @ 6:03 pm

Cheap holidays to destinations such as Spain, Portugal and the Tenerife have always been in high demand, but you would be forgiven for thinking that the credit crunch and subsequent global recession may have discouraged the Brits from wanting to travel abroad this year.

However, according to research from Tesco Travel Money, the situation is quite the contrary and has meant an increase in demand for cheap holidays.

The supermarket surveyed over 2,000 adults in Britain and the results showed that more than half intended to take a holiday abroad this year and almost 30 per cent were planning two or more holidays somewhere in Europe.

Naturally, there is some change with more people looking to spend less than last year (34 per cent) and some saying they will be spending ‘significantly less’ (12 per cent).

Direct holidays and last minute holidays are proving popular although this is not the main area where people are planning to reduce their spending. Over half intended to reduce their spend on food and drink whilst on holiday and 43 per cent said they would buy fewer duty free items and gifts.

A spokesperson for Tesco Travel Money said:

“It’s great to see that holidaymakers are pulling out the stops to get value for money and making sacrifices to ensure they get their two weeks in the sun.”
