Holidays to Larnaca

Discover the hidden pleasures of Larnaca

Not just a pretty face, Larnaca has more than just fine beaches and great restaurants to offer holiday-makers. Many divers, for example, come here to dive the wreck of the Zenobia. This huge roll-on, roll-off ferry sank in 1980 on her maiden voyage, fully loaded with trucks and cargo and now lies in 42 metres of water and the top of the wreck is easily accessible by a PADI-certified diver.

Elsewhere the sight of thousands of pink flamingoes nesting for the winter in the Larnaca Salt Lake is one of nature's most extraordinary highlights.

if you're a history buff then Larnaca Castle, with its Byzantine fortifications and foundations dating back to the early 12th century will pique your interest.

Set on the southern side of the island, Larnaca has a couple of superb beaches and has a well-deserved reputation for its excellent restaurants - many of which are rather expensive. That said, decent restaurants at decent prices abound and the Larnaca holidays needn't break the bank.

Hints and tips for your Larnaca holiday

Eating

Eating out in Larnaca - cheap, expensive and everything in between

They take fresh, well-prepared food very seriously in Cyprus, and Larnaca, as one of the major towns on the island has more than its fair share of excellent restaurants. Importantly the budget side is well-catered to as well and there is a plethora of very decent restaurants in the middle rung.

The budget options - for good cheap eats in Larnaca there are plenty of choices. Militzis on Piale Pasha  for tasty, child-friendly, group-friendly food - basic at a decent price. Excellent pub grub and a great atmosphere is the special of the day at the Ayia Anna Tavern in the village of the same name about 10kms from Larnaca.

Mid price options - Ammos on McKenzy Beach is a great place for an afternoon cocktail as the sun goes down, followed by their take on Asian cuisine. Also on McKenzy is the Lush Beach Bar - excellent food, great atmosphere and good service.

Splurge - you won't be able to complain about how well-done your steak is at Stonegrill Flavors because you cook it - and seafood, and chicken - on a hot stone plate. The sizzling aromas, the pleasure and drama of cooking it all yourself, and all served with delicious sides make this a standout place. 25 Cosma Lysioti St.

Things not to miss

Larnaca - diving, swimming, great food

As one of the larger towns in Cyprus, Larnaca boasts a little bit of everything - sightseeing through old ruins, fresh food in an outstanding array of world class restaurants, grand resorts and a series of great beaches.

Larnaca Castle - is now a museum and an open-air theatre. This Byzantine fort was started around the early 12th century and built up by successive generations into the marvelous stone castle that it is today.

Dive the Zenobi - in 1980 on her maiden voyage the fully-laden Zenobi sank just 200 metres out into Larnaca harbour - the result of bad programming in the ballast computer. Dive fans can go as far as the seabed hull at 42 metres and just-certified divers can go to the top of the ship, resting as it does some 18 metres below the sea surface.

Larnaca Salt Lake - quite close to the airport lies the salt lake and it's important to wildlife lovers the world over. Every year during winter flocks of Pink Flamingoes make the lake their home and fatten up on the brine shrimp that pack the lake. 85 other species of birdlife nest in the wetlands and it's a fun day trip if you're inclined to natural highlights.
