Dallas Holidays

Deep in the heart of Texas lies Dallas Fort Worth, an oil town well worth a visit. Flights to Dallas are easy because it's a major hub airport for the south west and Dallas itself is a pretty, big, Texas town. Boasting a population of some 6.4 million, the greater Dallas area has a population that can drive all manner of entertainments.

Dallas Fort Worth has many galleries and a ton of outdoor activities. There are plenty of restaurants (you have to try Ribs done the old fashioned Dallas Texas way - slow and barbecued), and a vibrant music scene.

The aquarium is an amazing place with a walk-through shark tank and plenty of rare animals on view. The Dallas Texas climate lends itself to flora and fauna and the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a world-class facility.

The budget options - Dallas boasts great sushi at Teppo on lower Greenville Ave. There's excellent Tex-Mex at Mi Cocina in Highland Park Village. This is a local hot spot that serves great margaritas.

Mid price options - for a more upmarket look at the Tex-Mex phenomenon, try La Duni which is a Mexican/Latin fusion without the fancy frills that implies - also famous for their desserts and cuatro leches cake. There are two locations in Uptown. Being Texas, you're in the very centre of red meat, so try your luck at Three Forks, or Sullivan's on the tollway north of Loop 635 or Bob's Chop House and Del Frisco's.

Splurge - the chef garnering all the good reviews at the moment is Stephan Pyles. His self-named restaurant is at 1807 Ross Ave in downtown and serves innovative, big flavours. This is the epitome of south-western cooking with Mexican flavours and local produce. The chef has been lauded by critics from the NY Times, the LA Times and more.

Winters are generally mild with temps hovering around the 13-20C mark. Strong winds call Blue Northers which pick up the icy Rocky Mountain air blast the place down to zero.

Summers are hot, with temps in the low to mid thirties. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant and are probably the best times to visit.

Dallas Arts District - take a walk down Ross Avenue and enjoy the fresh air and all the sights you'll see. If you fancy exploring the galleries and museums, buy an all-in-one ticket at any of the museums which will entitle you to access the Dallas Museum of Art, The Nasher Sculpture Garden and the Trammel Crow Asian Art museum. The rest of the arts don't suffer with a performing arts centre and auditorium in close proximity. You'll be jealous of the lifestyle this gives the locals.

Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens - is on Garland Road and is an exceptional way to pass a sunny Sunday morning. The gardens are spectacular and if spring is in the air the perfume is glorious. It covers 66 acres, filling the space with woods and gardens, manicured lawns and walking tracks.

The Sixth Floor Museum - is a museum dedicated to life and times and death of John F Kennedy. This is the Texas Book Depository from which Oswald fired the fateful shots and it's a must-see for anyone remotely interested in the story.

Dallas World Aquarium - everyone in the family will love this engineering marvel of a place. The tunnel gives you an up close and personal look at the wildlife swimming past you. The Aquarium also features learning exhibits and interactive displays.

Zero Gravity Thrill Amusement Park Dallas - this is apparently the 'only thrill ride park featuring five rides'! Do them all if you dare. There is the Bungee Jump, the Nothin' but Net, Texas Blastoff, the Skycoaster and the Skyscraper for your complete scarification - go on, what are you waiting for!

White Rock Lake Park - takes full advantage of Dallas' weather and can be enjoyed most of the year. Over a 1,000 acres of running and walking tracks, forest and wildlife. There's dozens of picnic spots and it's just 8kms from the city centre.

The must see - the Dealey Plaza precinct where JFK was shot. It's recent history and haunting for the impact it had on American life and their world view. In some ways it's a reminder of more innocent times.
