If there’s one word to describe holidays to Amsterdam it’s versatile; because there’s more to this city than you first might think.

At first glance the city, which is the capital of the Netherlands and is located in Holland, boasts some stunning architecture with pretty canals weaving in and out of the buildings. But dig a little deeper and you will soon see that there’s plenty going on behind the scenes making Amsterdam city breaks a favourite for travellers.

Holidays to Amsterdam

For a start, the city is every shopaholic’s dream with clothes and shoes over flowing in the shop windows. There are plenty of independent shops too, offering something a little different.

For the culture vultures, there’s plenty to explore while on Amsterdam city breaks. The city boasts one of the largest historic city centres in Europe and has around 7000 registered historic buildings to admire. There’s a massive choice of museums and tours to go with them too.

The city is great for relaxing holidays but it’s also the first choice for party-goers as it’s famous for its impressive nightlife and party atmosphere. There’s plenty of live music and plenty of clubs and bars to satisfy all sorts of revellers.

Amsterdam has an interesting past to explore. It began as a 13th century fishing village and over the years, has been transformed into a bustling city of culture, tourism and business. The major changes to the city occurred in the 17th century when Amsterdam expanded and the canals were developed. It was at this time that the city’s famous art scene really began to thrive too and the city we know and love today began to develop.

Amsterdam has the ability to be any kind of holiday break. The versatile city is ideal for short city breaks, but there is also plenty to explore if you wish to make your stay a little longer. For a group who make the most of last minute holidays and want to party, there is plenty on offer but for explorers looking for art, culture and history, this city is ideal. The narrow side streets, canals and strong cafe culture add charm to Amsterdam. This city really has caught the best of both worlds; with plenty of culture to explore and a vibrant nightlife to keep party-goers entertained too.

Attractions in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is popular with people who enjoy visiting museums. And for these people, the most important place to visit is Het Museumplein. On this square, there is Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, House of Bols Cocktail & Genever Experience and Coster Diamonds. These venues offer the best in classical Dutch art, works by Van Gogh as well as some modern art.

Many tourists take the opportunity to visit Anne Frank’s home while on a city break to Amsterdam. At Prinsengracht 263, by the canal, is where Anne Frank and her family hid during the Second World War. There is also an interesting exhibition here which sheds light on the experiences that Anne Frank and her family may have had.

Jordaan is the place to be if you’re looking to immerse yourself in art on your Amsterdam city break. There are around 40 specialist galleries here, all built in old homes or shops and displaying everything from photography to classical work.

Amsterdam’s world class symphony orchestra can be found at the Concertgebouw which is a spectacular concert hall with some amazing acoustics.

For holidays focussed on partying, then the two areas to explore are Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein. From vibrant bars and clubs in these areas to the unique cafes and restaurants across the whole city, there are enough places to while away the days and nights.

Travel in Amsterdam

There’s only one way to travel in style on holidays to Amsterdam and that is by bicycle. In the city you will discover a real bicycle culture with as many bikes as there are people. And with plenty of bike paths and bike racks available, it’s really easy to get around. The city is small enough to get around on bicycle and flat terrain makes it pleasant and easy to do. Cycling is one of the best ways to explore and see what Amsterdam has to offer. But if cycling is not your thing, then the tram network can easily connect you to various parts of the city.

Eating in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is overflowing with restaurants and cafes where you can sit down for a leisurely meal or quick snack. Here though, visiting a restaurant is considered an important activity and guests are welcome to take their time with their meal. Servers will generally leave you for as long as you wish. But it is worth remembering that the Dutch eat early and therefore restaurants may close earlier than expected.

Amsterdam weather

Winters in Amsterdam never get too cold and because it is surrounded by water on three sides, Amsterdam enjoys the benefits of a heat island effect. The summer months are warm but rarely get too hot.

Things not to miss in Amsterdam

1.People choose a City break to Amsterdam for the architecture alone and it’s easy to see why. The oldest building in the city is the Oude Kerk.

2. There are hundreds of flea markets in and around Amsterdam to choose from but the most famous is the Albert Cuypmarkt which gives a real insight into the Dutch way of life.

3. Discover the secluded secret garden of Begijnhof where it is possible to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Here, there is a secluded garden and a courtyard which was established in the 14th century as a convent.

4. Take a trip along the canals on a boat. It’s the perfect way to travel and to see all the best sights of the city. The canals and bridges are all lit up at night; so trips down the canal after dark are always a favourite with couples on romantic city breaks.
